Launch of Sunshine Office
Communities in Melbourne’s west, including an Ethiopian woman reuniting with her long lost son, have been benefiting from a range of services for refugees and migrants with the opening of Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre (MRC)’s new Sunshine office. The office will today (18/05/2011) be officially launched by Senator Kate Lundy, Federal Parliamentary Secretary for Immigration & Multicultural Affairs.
“We have realised that there was a gap in the provision of services for people from CALD backgrounds and that these communities were under-represented in using existing services. This was also confirmed by mainstream providers, so we thought we would work to fulfil those needs and close those gaps,” explained Spectrum MRC’s CEO, Ms Rosemary Kelada.
With a projection of 49% population increase by 2026, the North-West is already Melbourne’s largest region and is also the most culturally diverse region in Victoria, with 20% of the population born in non-English speaking countries. The municipality of Brimbank, which includes Sunshine, has roughly 40% of its population born overseas and 37% under 24 years of age. [Read more]
