SPECTRUM LEAVES LEGACY OF PIONEERING LOW COST IMMIGRATION SERVICES

After six years of successful operations, amounting to almost 3,000 clients from 65 countries assisted, and a legacy of pioneering low cost immigration services in the sector, Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre (MRC) will cease operating its fee charging migration advice service Spectrum Immigration Services (SIS) on 31st July. Recognising such social enterprises are now available across Melbourne, Spectrum MRC will focus on the consolidation of its existing services and commit to the provision of free migration information sessions for ethnic communities.

The decision reflects a review of Spectrum MRC’s organisational strategic direction as well as the complex and fast changing migration law system, as explained by Spectrum MRC CEO Ms Rosemary Kelada: “Since SIS commenced, the level of complexity of legislation and reporting requirements related to migration law has changed a great deal.

“When SIS was established, no other social enterprise existed to provide access to low-income clients who couldn't afford private migration agent fees, but now there are many. We have pioneered a model of fee-charging for migration advice services in this field that has set a trend and been replicated. Whilst no longer offering this service, our contribution of reuniting families and assisting employers to gain skilled migrants will leave a lasting legacy for the communities we assist. We are incredibly proud of the almost 3,000 clients we have serviced and grateful for all the hard work undertaken by SIS staff in the past years,” said Ms Kelada.

Spectrum MRC will continue to provide settlement and free migration services for people who have been in Australia less than five years, a service which is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. “Like any other migrant resource centre, we operate under strict funding and reporting systems. We are accountable not only to funding bodies but, ultimately, to the communities we serve. We have asked ourselves, which was the best way to use existing resources to support these communities. In light of an environment completely different from when we started SIS, we have recognised that the time has come to consolidate our services such as settlement, family, youth, aged care, disability, employment and training,” explained Ms Kelada.

“We know and recognise that the Australian immigration system is difficult to understand, whether you are trying to stay in Australia or sponsoring people from overseas. Those who are not eligible for the free government funded service, will be referred to appropriate networks and can attend quarterly information sessions. The sessions will provide a forum where individuals can get up-to-date information in matters of migration in the various categories of skilled migration, partner, family reunion, temporary business and employer sponsored visas,” said Ms Kelada.

Spectrum MRC’s first quarterly migration information session for communities will be held in late August, with the exact date to be publicised through Spectrum’s website and social media.

"Even though I had some understanding of the migration system, Spectrum Immigration Services (SIS) was very helpful in helping me understand the process.
