About the Role

The Parenting in a new culture is an initiative of Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre aiming at strengthening and supporting parents from CALD backgrounds to raise their children effectively in the Australian context. The parenting programs for African Refugee Families aims at piloting Parenting Skills Development Courses and providing individual parenting support and advice to parents from the African communities living around Melbourne.

We have a part time position available to work with parents from Burundi with the overall aim of enhancing their parenting skills to raise their children effectively in the new but different cultural, social and educational environment. Key objectives of this role are to:

  1. offer a culturally responsive parenting model to parents within the local Victorian Burundian community,
  2. enhance the capacity of parents within the Burundian community to raise their children effectively and integrate their parenting practices within the Australian context,
  3. support the role of parents and families and to provide them with better life opportunities in order to assist their children to reach their full potential,
  4. strengthen social cohesion and acculturation of the Burundian community.

Requirements

— An appropriate tertiary qualifications and / or relevant experience in working with newly arrived groups in particular the Burundian community.

— Extensive experience and understanding of the practices within the African nations generally and the specific cultural and social practices of the Burundian community.

— Fluency in a local language spoken by people from Burundi as well as English.

— Experience in the area of settlement and/or a related human services sector.

— Training / facilitation experience and/or Certificate IV in Workplace Training.

— Demonstrated knowledge or experience within the family services and parenting sectors.

— Excellent oral and written communication skills, including skills in addressing groups and public speaking.

— Passion for working with CALD communities and an understanding of the issues facing new migrants.

— Strong interpersonal skills and ability to enhance the team environment.

— Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of programs.
