Men & Family Relationships Project Officer (Somali community)

About the Role
  • 2 days per week
  • Based in Preston

This program supports men and their families to maintain and promote quality family relationships through social connectedness, group activities and community education programs. The Project Officer will also undertake some direct case management and counseling.

The project targets men of Somali backgrounds with overall objectives of:

  • Assisting men within the Somali community to deal with emotional issues around relationships, so that they can manage a range of relationship difficulties with family members.
  • Promoting and maintaining a quality family life and relationships of men and families within the Somali community
  • Developing culturally tailored approaches to working with male clients within the Somali community.
  • Assisting men and families within the Somali community to overcome family relationships difficulties and preventing family relationships breakdown.
  • Enhancing social connectedness for men and their families within the Somali community through the establishment of Men’s groups for social, recreational, sporting and educational activities.
  • Assisting males and their families within the Somali community to come to terms with pressure of starting a new life in a new country with different cultural, social and educational values and norms.
  • Enhancing understanding of members within the Somali community about the Australian system, laws, norms, practices and culture.

Requirements

Essential

— An appropriate tertiary qualifications and / or relevant experience in working with newly arrived groups in particular the Somali community.

— Experience in the area of settlement and/or a related human services sector.

— Training / facilitation experience or Certificate IV in Workplace Training.

— Demonstrated knowledge or experience within the family services and parenting sector.

— Excellent oral and written communication skills, including skills in addressing groups and public speaking.

— Ability to work autonomously or within a team setting, set priorities and work to deadlines.

— Passion for working with CALD communities and an understanding of the issues facing new migrants.

— Strong interpersonal skills and ability to enhance the team environment.

— Computer skills, including proficiency Microsoft Office suite of programs.

Desirable

· Current driving license and own car.

· Fluency in the Somali language (Af Soomaali) in addition to the English language
