About the Role

The Men and Family Relationship Program at SMRC supports men from CALD backgrounds and their families to maintain and promote quality family relationships through social connectedness, group activities and community education programs as well as responding to their daily issues and addressing their concerns through direct counselling and case management service.

The Project Officer will work with men of Sudanese backgrounds to:

  • Assist men within the Sudanese community to deal with emotional issues around relationships, so that they can manage a range of relationship difficulties with family members.
  • Promote and maintain a quality family life and relationships of men and families within the Sudanese community.
  • Develop culturally tailored approaches to working with male clients within the Sudanese community.
  • Assist men and families within the Sudanese community to overcome family relationships difficulties and preventing family relationships breakdown.
  • Enhance social connectedness for men and their families within the Sudanese community through the establishment of Men’s groups for social, recreational, sporting and educational activities.
  • Assist males and their families within the Sudanese community to come to terms with pressure of starting a new life in a new country with different cultural, social and educational values and norms.
  • Enhance understanding of members within the Sudanese community about the Australian system, laws, norms, practices and culture.

Requirements

— An appropriate tertiary qualifications and / or relevant experience in working with newly arrived groups in particular the Sudanese community.

— Fluency in a local language spoken by people from Sudan (Arabic and/orDinka) as well as English.

— Experience in the area of settlement and/or a related human services sector.

— Training / facilitation experience or Certificate IV in Workplace Training.

— Demonstrated knowledge or experience within the family services and parenting sector.

— Excellent oral and written communication skills, including skills in addressing groups and public speaking.

— Ability to work autonomously or within a team setting, set priorities and work to deadlines.

— Passion for working with CALD communities and an understanding of the issues facing new migrants.

— Strong interpersonal skills and ability to enhance the team environment.

— Computer skills, including proficiency Microsoft Office suite of programs.
