The GOOD SPORTS FOR DIVERSITY project will focus on raising Cultural Awareness amongst non Muslim communities and developing social cohesion amongst Muslim and non- Muslim youth though sport.

The project aims to contribute to greater social cohesion amongst Muslim and non-Muslim youth in northern metropolitan Melbourne by utilising sport as a vehicle to address the following issues

• low awareness and understanding of Muslim culture amongst members of predominantly non-Muslim youth involved in local sporting clubs, as well as local school students
• negative stereotypes shared by both Muslim and non-Muslim youth of each other and the sport’s culture
• leadership skills of Muslim and non-Muslim youth in the area of fostering diversity
• lack of awareness, connection and involvement of Muslim youth in local sporting clubs and other mainstream organisations

The project aims to have the following impact on our local community

• Increased social cohesion, harmony, connection and security amongst Muslim and non-Muslim youth involved in local sports club from the developed awareness and understanding of Muslim culture
• Reduced stereotypes between the two groups of each other and their sport
• Increased communication, inter-personal and leadership skills of both young Muslim people and sports club members through presentations developed
• Increased awareness of and long-term participation in local sporting clubs amongst local Muslim population and hence increased connection to local mainstream community

The project has been funded by the Department of immigration and Citizenship (DIAC), National Action Plan (NAP).

Working closely with a steering committee, the project is designed to enhance the participation of Australian-Muslim youth in the social and cultural life of Australia, resulting in mutual understanding and an increased likelihood of integration. It will address the priority area of encouraging interactions between the Muslim and non-Muslim population within local sports clubs (football, cricket, and basketball) in the northern metropolitan area of Melbourne.

Essential

• Relevant tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Community Development Work, Youth Work or any other Human Services/Community Welfare discipline OR an equivalent combination of extensive experience, education and expertise is essential
• Experience in the youth sector
• Demonstrated ability to coordinate projects that meet aims, timeframes and budgets.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including skills in addressing groups and public speaking
• Passion for working with CALD communities and an understanding of the issues facing new migrants
• Computer skills, including proficiency Microsoft Office suite of programs
• Current driving license and own car.

Desirable

• Fluency in a relevant community language other than English, would be highly desirable
• Training / Facilitation experience and / or Certificate IV in Workplace Training
